I solved the issue, but the registry editing was not the prettiest:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cpp] : (Default) : gvim
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\gvim\shell\open\command] : (Default) : "C:\Program
Files\vim\vim73\gvim.exe" "%1"
Neither of these existed, but with both of them there, the various
filetypes are now associated. No idea why this was needed.
