how to do datetime arithmetic in vimscript?

What is best solution for doing date and datetime arithmetic in
vimscript? It seems reltime() doesn't provide enough to do much. Is
using the Python support and calling out to Python best solution? Are
there any publicly available Vim scripts out there that provide a pre-
made interface to Python datetime functions?
