PHP filetype::sql syntax highlighting in strings

Using vim 7.2 in ubuntu 10.04, Huge version with GTK2 GUI.
From :h php
I see the following
"""
If you like SQL syntax highlighting inside Strings:
let php_sql_query = 1
"""

In truth, I *do not* like SQL syntax highlighting inside Strings.

So in ~/.vim/after/ftplugin/php.vim
I have the following:

let php_sql_query = 0

and when I open a PHP file and
:echo php_sql_query
I see 0
--------------------------------------------
Yet, I still have sql keywords highlighted!
Grrr!
--------------------------------------------

How may I turn the feature off?
thanks
