given "by name" means buffer names:

" vimrc:
:set swb=usetab

" search for a tab page in Cmdline mode (or open a new tab page):
:tab sbuf {part-of-buffer-name}<Tab>

It makes sense to map a key / abbrev for the ":tab sbuf" part.
