Just an update: I got the vim72 source and tried to compile, had the
exact same problem.

I then tried compiling the vim72 source on a different machine which,
I think, had an older version of MinGW, with msys in entirely separate
directory structure. That compile went fine, and I moved the gvim.exe
to the Win7/64 computer, on which I had done a binary Vim72 install.
The gvim.exe compiled on the other machine (running WinXP) works fine
on the Win7/64 machine..
