I don't use the same platform, so can't help with your actual question.

However...why don't you like Gvim? Perhaps simply altering some settings
using a ~/.vimrc will be able to make Gvim nice enough for you. I
essentially do this on the Mac...I set 'guioptions' in my .vimrc to
remove the toolbar, etc., to make Gvim much more like console Vim.

The main remaining deficiency, though, is :! and friends: you can't
really drop out of Gvim into a shell successfully.
