I looked at the script. It is already setting 'foldmethod', so you
don't need to worry about that.

I'm not sure either. I see that syntax highlighting is enabled, but
do you have filetype plugins enabled? What is the result of this
command?

:filetype

It should look like this

filetype detection:ON plugin:ON

or this

filetype detection:ON plugin:ON indent:ON

As an experiment, you could create three empty files,

touch /home/pettis/.vim/syntax/python.vim
touch /home/pettis/.vim/ftplugin/python.vim
touch /home/pettis/.vim/plugin/dummy.vim

and verify that they all appear in the output of :scriptnames after
you open a Python file.
