Thanks/ I tried your suggestiont but it made no difference.
I finally found where the template is being invoked and commented it out.
 
It is in ...\vimfiles\plugin\perl-support.vim (line 2499). I commented this
line plus the next few lines which invoke templates for modules, pod, etc.
and the problem has gone away.
