See vim-addon-async's docs which lists the most common methods:

Summary: Either you have to use polling (on idle event or such) or you
have to use client-server feature or netbeans protocol or such (like
eclim). Eventualy h: if_mzsch.txt can be used for threading support.
Python threads etc are not safe.
