I recommend:

:set nocompatible
:filetype plugin on
:syntax on

or even (at startup, instead of them)

:runtime vimrc_example.vim

You may want to do the latter automatically at every startup by creating
a ~/.vimrc with (for the time being) only the single line

runtime vimrc_example.vim

Later, perhaps, you will add additional lines, probably after this one.
