In addition and response to what others have written, these two things
may be of interest:

1. If you press <i> followed by <Esc> the cursor will move back, but if
you press <a> followed by <Esc>, it will be in the same place. Maybe you
would like to make a habit of using <a> rather than <i> if this suits
your workflow and/or mindset better.

2. If you wish to allow the cursor to remain past the end of a line in
normal mode, you can ":set virtualedit=onemore" (see ":help
'virtualedit'").
