Yes, I noted that the OP's message was ISO8859-1 and your reply UTF-8.

I looked at the OP's message headers and they looked unfamiliar.. so, it
looks as if he is posting from Google's web interface rather than via an
email client.

I can confirm that it definitely got here as an "a-hat" (U+00E2) in this
message.

Rather annoying that Google should mess up content like this.
