Re: customize indentation

You need to set the strings to use (listchars) when in list mode and for the list command.
:help listchars

This is what I use.

if has('multi_byte') && &enc ==# 'utf-8'
set listchars=tab:▸\ ,extends:❯,precedes:❮,trail:·,nbsp:±
let &showbreak = '↪'
else
set listchars=tab:>\ ,extends:>,precedes:<,trail:.,nbsp:.
endif
