Vim as prose editor - how to remove '~' and '@'

I am trying out gvim and vim for use as a prose editor for writing - rather
than programmer coding.

Whilst doing pgup and pgdn one gets ~ and @ on the screen and I was wondering
if it was possible to remove them.

thanks
james
