Vim has a couple "recent files" plugins, and additionally has a more bare-bones built-in list of recent files via :oldfiles and :e #<5 (for the 5th file in the list) or :e #<2 (for the 2nd file). See :help :oldfiles and :help c_#<.
I personally use the MRU plugin: http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=521
