VIM/Python: auto-complete script problems.

Could someone check this out:
https://github.com/Veek/Python/blob/master/junk/vim/newbie.vim
https://github.com/Veek/Python/blob/master/junk/vim/newbie_autocomplete.py

The very last function:
func! Auto_complete(start, base)

It's an auto-complete script. re.<TAB> is supposed to list the methods/constants

My problem is that my auto_complete function has to return a column position. I extract the column position using python but then to pass that value to Vim, i have to use vimscript! So i have to create a l:start and then within python do:
vim.command('let l:start = -1')

Anyway to avoid this and do it nicely?
