Not really on topic for this group, but the makefile-based project I use just
has "sub" makefiles for various subdirectories, and the highest level makefile
just includes the sub-ones.
So it really is essentially "one" makefile, but I guess logistically,
the sub-makefiles just have to deal with stuff at their level.
