To a function in a *.py file. Python module is supposed to do nothing
except for defining a few variables when it is imported, something is
being done when you call functions/classes/etc stored in those defined
variables.

Just like you exit from your VimL code from within VimL code. Return
or use exceptions, programming techniques do not change when you
change language. @A. S. Budden gave a simplified example.
