Does not repro with Vim 8. Looks like the bug was fixed. Yay! I confirmed by downloading and compiling version 8.0 (2016 Sep 12, compiled Aug 18 2017 16:16:46) with patches: 1-586 from here.
I upgraded the version on my desktop using packages from https://launchpad.net/~jonathonf/+archive/ubuntu/vim .
