It is set in the syntax/markdown file and links to htmlItalic:
markdownItalic xxx links to htmlItalic

You can override it in ~/.vim/after/syntax/html.vim:
hi htmlItalic gui=NONE

If you use vim inside terminal, substitute gui with term or cterm.
