language handling confused

What's happening here? KDE, with $LANGUAGE=en_GB:en_US:fr and $LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8

    :lang mess
    Langue courante pour messages : "en_NZ.UTF-8"

vim --clean, also gvim --clean.  I'm confused.
