gvim freeze when launched from terminal

when I launch gvim from terminal using
$ gvim
It immediately freeze, using 100% CPU.
I can work around it by either launching it using
$ gvim -f &
or using a launcher from the menu.

I am not sure if this is a purely gvim issue or also related to its
interaction with an X window manager because it seems to only occur
when I am using compiz. If I switch to another WM, I can launch gvim
in terminal using $gvim and it does not freeze.

Any ideas? Thanks.
