This function (that I picked up from somebody else a few years ago)
is pretty useful for showing the exact highlighting groups in use:

nnoremap <silent> <Leader>hi :call <SID>SynStack()<CR>
function! <SID>SynStack()
if !exists("*synstack")
return
endif
echo map(synstack(line('.'), col('.')), 'synIDattr(v:val, "name")')
endfunc
