Charles, a longer explanation is that some of us use t-prot
(http://www.escape.de/~tolot/mutt/) in mutt to combat TOFU, and truncate
overlong quotes. (They still can be revealed with a keystroke, when needed.)
But a sender can ensure that t-prot will not mask text placed between v+
and v-, so that will be displayed by default. (See the manpage link, under
INSTALLATION.) I'm not sure I understand Christian's reference.
