Hi, everyone.

O upgrade my MacVim to version 9 this week. Everything is Ok but the terminal window colors. Before the upgrade, a terminal window, opened inside a GUI view, assumed the foreground and background colors of the current colorscheme normal group applyed to Vim. After the upgrade it seams to assume the colors applyed to my default terminal App (Terminal.app on macOS). Is there a way to restore the old behavior?

Regards.

Your colorscheme is probably outdated. Needs ":hi link Terminal Normal" to make it follow Normal color.

Thanks for creating the issue, Anton. I added a comment to it about how 0<c-s-d> works, just not 0<c-d>:

imap 0<c-d> 0<c-s-d>

Much appreciated.

Re: Control keys not working

0D works with NONE, but ctrl-_ does not. I'm using a US QWERTY layout. I'm not sure if my 8.2 is older than 4803, but things work on there.

Patch 8.2.4803 introduced radical change of how keyboard input is handled in w32 gvim. It is however not clear, how your problem can be caused by it (would be otherwise reported 100x times already - and it is not). Still, may be you use some non- standard keyboard layout?

Also please double check with -U NONE that stock Ctrl+d really not working?

I wonder if this is a hardware problem.

Do control keys still work normally in other programs? For example, when
you make a change to a document in Word or Outlook and then press
Ctrl+Z, is the change reverted, or do you see a Z inserted the document?

There have been problems with specific keyboards. What keyboard layout
are you using?

Re: Control keys not working

Steven,

They work everywhere else. Once again, they were working fine in GVim 8.2. Also, I've tried it on two different computers now.  In fact, I just opened up an old GVim 8.1 I had lying around while typing this email message and they worked just fine.

I wonder if this is a hardware problem.

Do control keys still work normally in other programs? For example, when
you make a change to a document in Word or Outlook and then press
Ctrl+Z, is the change reverted, or do you see a Z inserted the document?

As an addendum, here is a simple example that works (as in, doesn't work) even with gvim -u NONE -U NONE:

imap <c-_> TEST

Hitting <c-_> (I usually just hit control-hyphen, but control-shift-hyphen doesn't work, either) and just inserts a hyphen.

Control keys not working

Hello,

I'm using 32-bit GVim on Windows 10, 9.0 with patches 1-107, though I noticed this with just patches 1-27, also: when I hit control keys in insert mode, it just inserts the key as if control hadn't been pressed.

Simple example: 0<c-d>, which is supposed to delete all indent from the line. I just get a '0D' onscreen.

I can accept that this might be caused by a plugin, but it wasn't happening in the 8.2 days, so thought I would mention it in case someone else had seen it, also.

vim9 file manager/dir explorer

Hi, for those of you who already have vim9, could you test "a new plugin" that serves a role of simple file manager / dir explorer?

Okay. Thank you for clarifying this.

You say that, but it has been annoying me and confusing my friends for
at least 5 years.

That being said, I put the following together for setting the Linux tty
/ VGA cursor size, enabling the use of a block cursor for visual mode.
Regarding my comments, I made some assumptions about vim behavior based
on observations:

" set cursors for linux tty
"
" See: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/plain/Documentation/VGA-softcursor.txt?h=v2.6.12
if &term =~ "linux"

" start insert mode (using standard underline in linux tty)
let &t_SI = "\e[?2c"
" start replace mode (using thick underline in linux tty)
let &t_SR = "\e[?3c"
" end insert or replace mode (block cursor shape)
let &t_EI = "\e[?8c"

" vim only uses t_EI when entering normal mode by leaving insert mode,
" and instead uses t_VS at the very beginning. However, vim doesn't send
" t_VS if t_vs is not also set. Set them both to t_EI so we get a
" block cursor when vim starts.
let &t_vs = &t_EI
let &t_VS = &t_EI

" the default cursor visible/invisible codes include "\e[?c" sequences,
" which reset the cursor shape (preventing t_SI, t_SR, and t_EI from
" working)
let &t_ve = "\e[?25h"
let &t_vi = "\e[?25l"

" reset cursor shape when vim exits
autocmd VimLeave * call echoraw("\e[?c")

endif " &term =~ "linux"

Thank you,

Kyle Marek

break long ex command into multiple lines

experts:
is there a way to break very long ex command into multiple line?

for example I'm using Asyncrun https://github.com/skywind3000/asyncrun.vim plugin to execute a long command:

:Asyncrun python3 myapp.py -a 123 -b 123 -c 123 -d 123 ....

In my notes I wanted to record this but with line breaks.
ideally, when I later need to run this command in vim, I can just copy and paste them into vim. but it does not work.

I've tried put \ in front of new lines, and at end of new lines, nothing works.

:Asyncrun
\ python3 myapp.py
\ -a 123 -b 123 -c 123 -d 123 ....

:Asyncrun \
 python3 myapp.py \
 -a 123 -b 123 -c 123 -d 123 ....

how do I break a long ex command into multiple lines?
Is this even supported?

Regards

personally, I like to wrap './configure's and or 'make's with a
'script -c make build-log' or similar, it gives me more
time/opportunity to "process" the details. to then "see where files
are going", I'd use (eg) 'grep'.

Questions:

....
3) How to install so that the existing version disappears?

Why to care about existing version? It is perfectly possible to configure with default prefix /usr/local and call "make install" at the end. New [g]vim will happily live in /usr/local/bin and it's runtime files also somewhere in /usr/local. Last thing is in your .profile or .bashrc or whatever shell you prefer: "export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH" - that way local bin will be first and running vim or gvim you will always get your own "local" version. May be even /usr/local/bin is already in your PATH, because it so common, please check

(Repeat part with PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH for all users with which you may login to wsl, eg root?)

With best regards, Anton

Re: vim with gui in windows

Thanks Gary, nice workaround! Just "y" is enough because I have "set clipboard=unnamed" which copies to a clipboard by "y".
Mouse selection works although keyboard one has some problems. Keyboard selection might be also adjusted in a similar way but it is not so important for me.

Stan: "*y works but i'd like to copy to the clipboard only by selection.

Does "*y not work for you? It does for me, when running vim (not gvim)
in a command window in Windows 10. (I have actually mapped ^C
(control+C) to "*y so that Ctrl+C behaves the same in Windows GUI
applications and in command-prompt Vim.)

My Vim is 7.4, but Id be awfully surprised if that stopped working in
later versions.

Short answer: no.

Background: Various terminals behave differently about how the cursor is
displayed. Also the cursor shape may depend on whether the terminal is
in focus or not. To avoid that the cursor disappears (which is a big
problem) the Visual highlighting is not applied to the character under
the cursor. That may look a little bit strange (small problem) but
you'll get used to it.

Huge version with GTK3 GUI.

type [vi|vim|gvim] shows "is hashed" /usr/bin/[vi|vim|gvim]
which is soft-linked as follows:
/usr/bin/[vi|vim|gvim] -> /etc/alternatives/[vi|vim|gvim] ->
/usr/bin/vim.gtk3

What was done:

>>>
>>>    "git clone; cd vim/src"
>
> make clean
> make distclean
> ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gui --enable-gui=gtk3
> --with-features=huge
> make && make test
