undodir: problems with deep pathes under linux

I set an undodir and now have problems when I edit some java file, because the undor file name is too long.

I get an E828: Cannot open undo file for writing: /home/david/.vim/undo//some%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%really%long%filename.java

My guess is, that this filename is longer than the defined NAME_MAX of my linux kernel:
#define NAME_MAX 255 /* # chars in a file name */

Any ideas how I can work with the undo dir and long pathes?
