I've part of the answer. line('v') get's the start of the visual selection. From the docs:
v In Visual mode: the start of the Visual area (the
cursor is the end). When not in Visual mode
returns the cursor position. Differs from '< in
that it's updated right away
"right away" works as I'd expect, and I can grab the start of the block. But, not the end of the block :-(
