Yes, in gnome, at least, there's a dead simple way to instantly locate
the pointer in the active window. Just hit the Control key, after having
set:

On Ubuntu:
Preferences->Mouse:Locate_Pointer

Or on Debian:
Applications->System_Tools->Preferences->System_Settings->Mouse_and_Touchpad:
Show position of pointer when Control key is pressed

Neither folding nor the prevailing wind direction then pose any
impediment to rapid location.
