Thanks all for the replies. I will try Dominique's method of building a new vim. Note that this issue is *very* rare, maybe happens every few weeks, so I do not expect it to happen again quickly, nor do I expect to run vim under valgrind constantly.
For those who might be interested, my configuration is on github at https://github.com/frioux/dotfiles, in vimrc and vim/. I use a lot of plugins (about 50) so I may be tickling vim in new and exciting ways.
