BTW, I'm using netrw v146 in both cases. It seems that this is the version that is packaged with vim (and has been for quite a while). I know there are newer versions. I don't know what their behavior is. However, I want this code to be in a plug-in that other people can use, and I don't want to require them to upgrade netrw in order to have my plug-in work.
