imap: triggered by completely different key sequence

Hi,

in .vimrc I use this:

imap <A-i> \*<TAB>

This works. However, when I try to create a composed key e with accent
' (that is: é), then in vim I get the output for the above imap...

What might be the reason here?

I am using vim-7.3 on linux in an xterm.
