omnicomplete if (can complete)

Hello,

Near the bottom of :help popupmenu-keys is this chunk of code:

inoremap <expr> . MayComplete()
func MayComplete()
if (can complete)
return ".\<C-X>\<C-O>"
endif
return '.'
endfunc

What is an example of (can complete) ?
I would like to get a chunk of code like this working, but am not sure how.
