Sorry for making you wait so long.

"Unknown mark" means you are in Normal mode, trying to go to a mark
which hasn't yet been defined. For marks a to z and A to Z, see

:help m

Marks < and > exist as soon as a Visual area has been set and cleared in
the current editfile (including clearing it by hitting : which enters
:'<,'> on the command line). Or the ' mark (to which you can go back
with a double backtick) is almost always set.

To enter a backtick in Insert mode (as part of the text), well, you must
be in Insert mode first (e.g. after one of a i o O c<motion> etc.).
