Can autoindent be made to recognize non-ascii space-like characters, eg., U+00a0

I sorta expected autoindent to copy indentation that consists of not just space and tab but also nbsp (U+00a0) and possibly some other Unicode spaces. Is there a way to make this happen, and does it seem at all reasonable to add this capability to Vim if the current program doesn't have it?
