listchars extends always show

listchars extends always show

vim on linux and mac

If I set the listchars option:
set listchars=extends:>,precedes:<

As I would expect:
set list
shows both the extends and precedes chars

NOT expected:
set nolist
still shows the extends char

Should extends be disabled when 'set nolist'
