Regarding vundle: I'm no vundle user but I recently stumbled over this blog entry while googling for something else: http://gmarik.info/blog/2014/02/04/why-i-stopped-contributing-to-vundle
Given the commits list though, it seems vundle is still alive and kicking: https://github.com/gmarik/Vundle.vim/commits/master
It would be interesting if the authors of all those plugins would chime in and explain why they wrote X while Y already existed and what it does better or worse.
