You do not need to be 100% precise here. Just use another file with random name near and rename(). In the rather unlikely cause of read (vim1)-read(vim2)-write(vim1)-write(vim2) where updates from vim1 are lost it is OK to lose them.
Most of time you do not have problems even if you simply use writefile().
