I prefer a maximized window, personally.  GNOME is already configured for Alt+F10 to maximize the active window.  Since my hands are already on the keyboard ... it's a quick thing to just maximize it after I open gvim.

This may not 100% answer your original question; but I figured I'd throw it out there in case it helps.
