So...Is using a scripting language an option? What platform are you on?
What do you have available/installed? Are you willing to investigate
installing something different to perform this task?

 

Scriptiling language is an option (python, php), although I have only experience with vim and cpp.

I am using Debian Sid and Windows 7.

I can install other software to manipulate xml with no problem.
