I find TeXmacs ( http://www.texmacs.org/ ) to be very convenient for editing latex like files. I normally use vim for text files but when it comes to structured documents with formulas, figures etc., I find TeXmacs to be very useful.
For your case, may be you can write the document in .tm format (texmacs native format) and then export it to tex. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
