Closing tabs in a certain direction

I would like to have different mappings for closing a window/tab, which would either select the next/right tab (default), or the left/previous one.

This should apply to both closing the last window and closing the whole tab.

I could imagine writing a function to wrap this, and then mapping it to closing a buffer and tab, but there might be some option I am missing.

Since Vim appears to default to "select next/right" tab, the function/mapping would have to take care of doing "gT" afterwards - if a tab has been closed.

Is there a better way to approach this?

Cheers,
Daniel.
