I used git bisect and tested with

$ src/vim -N -u NONE ../xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

where the file had already been created, to determine that the
commit that introduced this bug was:
