Not showing the menu bar is a Unity thing, not vim's fault.  Mousing
over the bar at the top of the screen (not the vim window) might,
depending on the invocation of gvim, show you vim's menu bar there. 

In fact this seems to be a bug in Vim, which was fixed a while ago: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/vim_dev/SptVxRhHpE8/discussion

Unfortunately the fixes were not taken by Ubuntu.  The most serious effect of the bug is not that there's no menu bar at all (on top of the screen or elsewhere), but that with IBus enabled there are 10+ second freezes.

Anyway, I'll try to build it from source.
