Seemingly random behaviour on exiting vim

If I clear my terminal and run vim, depending on the file I'm editing, when I exit vim I will sometimes be left at the top of the term where I started, or sometimes dropped at the bottom.

My TERM is set to screen-256color-bce. I've tried changng the term variable in .vimrc, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Ideally, I'd like to exit vim and be on the next line down from where I started from. Not a real big issue, but I just wondered why it did this and if there is a way to control it?
