Doh, I meant *both*...because :normal eats whatever comes after
it (such as the OP's other commands), one would have to do
something like

argdo ... exec 'normal dd' | ...

You can see, from two seasoned vimmers bumbling towards a correct
solution on this, why I opted for the straightforward Ex command
of "1d" :)
