You might also have a conflicting mapping. Also try:
:map ,,
:map! ,,

',' is a commonly-used value for <Leader> or <LocalLeader>, since it's
often easier to type than '\'. (See :help mapleader)

Otherwise I have the same results as AK; `:ab ,, foo` works fine.
