I think I can answer the question myself now. In my .vimrc I have
autocmd BufWinLeave * mkview
autocmd BufWinEnter * silent loadview
Once I do a :cd other/directory, this is stored in the view file. And
easily forgotten, especially when re-editing the file is months
later. The view file is patient however and it will not be forgotten.
The remedy is cd-ing back.
It has nothing to do with a version, so. It is just a feature.
I will use :cd in the future more mindfully...
