Well, there's the DrawIt plugin, which may help with your task:

I don't use it myself. If I were to do this once or twice, I'd use a
combination of :center and 'virtualedit'. If I were to do it often,
I'd probably define a mapping or abbreviation to expand to an empty
box and enter the text in replace mode.
