I'm not sure I follow the format of the file. Perhaps some
(shortened) example data would help. That said, I don't know if
something like
:s/|/&/gn
would help to let you know how many "|" characters are on a line
(the usefulness of this may be contingent on your 'report' setting,
which I find most helpful to set to 0 rather than the default of 2).
