The Txtfmt plugin allows you to highlight arbitrary text strings in Vim:

It provides a sort of "rich text" capability for text documents created
with Vim: i.e., configurable fg/bg colors, and all permutations of
underline, bold, italic, etc... Is this the capability you're describing?
